Sugar Foot Stomp
Fletcher Henderson and His Orchestra
1925
Sugar Foot Stomp is Henderson's reworking of King Oliver's Dippermouth Blues — the same tune, the same solo structure, but arranged for a ten-piece orchestra instead of a seven-piece New Orleans band. The transformation is instructive.

Maurice Ravel
1899
The title translates as 'Pavane for a Dead Princess,' and Ravel spent the rest of his life trying to convince people it wasn't as tragic as it sounds. He said it was simply a pavane — a slow Renaissance dance — of the kind a young Spanish infanta might have danced at the court of Philip II.
