Lyambiko & WDR Funkhausorchester - Berlin - New York (2019) [OKeh Records; Hi-Res/Flac]

10.10.2019

World popular culture, political upheaval and artistic exile: jazz singer Lyambiko sheds light on the connection between German and American popular music in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s

Berlin - New York is a statement, both personal and political, from the German jazz star Lyambiko. Together with arranger and composer Max Noth (Ryuichi Sakamoto, Lou Reid, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Matthew Herbert) and the Cologne Orchestra WDR Funkhausorchester, under the direction of Frank Strobel, she explores the diverse global connections between musical cultures in defining decades.

Berlin - New York is a collection of songs that were carefully selected by Lyambiko and adapted by Max Knot for the orchestra. It captures the moments of this turbulent period and sheds light on the connection between German and American popular music of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Songs like Gerhard Winkler's Answer Me, My Love (1953), September Song by Kurt Weil (1938), After the Rain by Bert Reisfeld (1943), or Hans Lang's It's Oh So Quiet (1948) the contradictions and obscurity of these bright decades in a completely incomparable way.
